Sandhill Cranes- Rowe Sanctuary, Platte River, Nebraska. Four sandhill cranes descend from the prairie sky like leaves in a gentle breeze to roost for the night on the wide, shallow sandbars of the Platte River. From late February to early April, sundown on the Platte is sheer spectacle, as scores of cranes return each evening in huge waves to the protection of this wide and braided river. During the day, they feed in agricultural fields and wetlands often several miles away. Each spring, the Platte River provides critical sanctuary and roosting habitat to a staggering 500,000 sandhill cranes and millions of migrating waterfowl, heading to sub-arctic and arctic breeding grounds far to the north.
