Sandhill crane with her chick. Central Florida.
Highly commended, BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition.
One blustery February day, I took this photograph of a day-old sandhill chick that had climbed onto its mothers back for warmth. The birds were on a nest in a small lake in central Florida, where I had spent several days hoping to photograph sandhill cranes hatching their young. These particular cranes had nested in the same territory for years and were used to the small boat I was on, piloted by a local who monitored crane-nesting activities in the lake.
