Sandhill Cranes. Platte River Valley, Nebraska. In a flurry of wings, sandhill cranes take to the air before dawn on an icy February morning along Platte River. The sandhill cranes usually begin to arrive in late February, but their numbers do not peak until mid March. The first arrivals are usually birds that have the furthest to migrate, ending up in breeding grounds above the Arctic Circle from Canada and Alaska to Siberia.
