Mississippi Sandhill Cranes. Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge, Louisiana. An endangered Mississippi sandhill crane stands among timbers after a prescribed burn. The area is overgrown with underbrush and planted slash pines, left from the days of pine plantations. Fire is a necessary and critical management tool on the refuge to improve crane nesting areas and restore native wet pine savanna habitat, which evolved with fire. The Mississippi Sandhill was one of the original members of the Endangered Species Act. There are only roughly 130 Mississippi Sandhill cranes in existence in the wild today.
