753 Shades of Grey - Sandhill Cranes

from 40.00

I had spent the night on the brink of the Platte in a small bivy tent camouflaged with prairie grasses that I often use as a blind. Last evening the wind was strong and out of the south which meant the cranes wold probably roost near the south bank. When I wok this morning I peeked out and they were only a whisper away.

Some days these birds explode off the morning roost, but toda was quiet and they trickled out in small groups. After a couple of hours, most of them had left the sandbar in from of me, but there was one that lingered. I think he or she was dancing for another crane just of out of my line of vision. He ran up and down the sandbar, leaping, twirling and whirling, and at one point stopped, arched his back and spread his wings, revealing every tiny glorious detail of his feathers and shades of grey. -Mike
